Some accidents are more predictable than others. When a train derailed in the Ohio Village of East Palestine you would be forgiven for not noticing right away. The Secretary of Transportation waited days to even mention it. But despite more than 1000 of these derailments each year and a dangerous cocktail of cargo, industry lobbyists and the politicians that do their bidding have been successful in watering down or just plain repealing rules to make railroads safer.
